What's the difference Donut or Doughnut?

Updated: Sep 3, 2022

The eternal donut or Doughnut lovers’ question is how to spell the lovely dessert and which donut shop is the best. Well for the second eternal question the answer I always give is Amy’s Donut Shop, they produce the best donuts in Denton and donuts near me and their service and flavor profiles are just a marvel. Today we are unpacking the story behind the first eternal question, the long-lasting debate and finally conclude how to spell the fried dough once known as oily cakes.

The official Oxford Dictionary spells the dessert as ‘doughnut’. The oversimplified, Americanized ‘donut’ according to the Grammatist has been around since the late 20th century. Just like the spelling of the treat there are so many types of donuts, you have cake donuts, filled donuts, raised donuts, and many more. One of the best Donut shops in Denton and donuts in columbus is Amy’s Donut Shop with their wide variety of flavors my personal favorite being the lucky charms donut. When the Massachusetts-based chain Dunkin’ Donuts started taking off the popularity of the “Donut” spelling also took off and is widely used today. The shortened, some might even say optimized, version of the spelling ‘donut’ is no longer just used in the USA examples of its use can be found all the way across the world in New Zealand all the way across the world and even in the UK which was quite shocking to learn.

So that settles the debate folks, both spellings are correct. Quite an unsatisfactory end to the debate but an end none the less. The donut or Doughnut community is a big place where people from all walks assemble to celebrate their favorite dessert. With newer and newer inventions and flavors coming in one can even order donuts online in Denton or donuts near me, now just directly at your doorstep. Who knows one day we would have donuts machines right at home but for now, let’s enjoy our donuts as is.
